Christmas is working out so far. Visiting the in-laws is surprisingly low-stress. So much so, I am more worried about my own upcoming kooky family issues and travel down to NC. Tomorrow will be visiting with Sue's nexus of friends and then Christmas day will be a big family gathering where all the neices and nephews get to tear into the presents. I'm keeping an eye on work as promised, though I will admit my interest is seriously waning. --- As a complete other thought, am I the only one who is pretty much annoyed at Jeff Atwood's "Coding Horror" blog? ( http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/) - First he loses his site because he doesn't to backups - (RAID is a backup? What is this? FurAffinity?) - but now and in-depth post about rebuilding his PC. Really? This is from the guy who is supposed to be a font of tech wisdom? These are the actions of a novice, not someone to listen to. |

Cold Days Hot Nights 2
I was going to write a lengthy, non-twitter-style report on that fursuit outing from two weeks ago, about how cool and full of win it was. I mean, how often do you meet tabloid press reporters who spontaneously interview you for their news paper AND Anonymous during a fursuit outing? Doesn't happen all that often. :) Then again, I'm tired, so I'll just drop a link to the video here. :) Oh, and Gandalf the grey was there, too! Fursuit walks are always fun, but this kind of 9-hour-extreme thing is awesome. I hope there's gonna be a CDHN3 soon. :) Current Mood: amused |

Riding the rails
So we're trying something new this year. We are taking the train home for Christmas. Sue and I tend to take a weekend here and there by ourselves. We realized that if we rolled the cost of one of those trips (2 nights in a hotel, some food) and the cost of a Christmas flight back east, it would be the cost of taking a sleeper train car. So the cost was a wash. So we compared benefits: Opt 1 - a relaxed multi-day trip, picture-window of the landscape, 3 genuine sit-down (knife-and-fork) meals a day, a full length bed, turn-down service, daily newspaper, private room with closeable door, full-sevice bar, shower, tour guides on-board for scenic areas, and a separate lounge and observation car. Opt 2 - Full cavity security search after 2 hour line by uncle Feely. A seat that a munchkin would find restricting. Plastic food in a box that costs $10. Loud noise. Shared air. Screaming children. A postage-stamp window that is always half-way off from my seat. And trying not to think about being in a pressurized steel tube of thousands of gallons of explosive fuel miles in the air that was serviced by a maintenance team whose union contracts were just cut. Let me give you a sampling of the first day: After taking some local transit, we boarded the California Zephyr. (A historic trained named after a famed coyena, I hear.) It's a double-decker train that leaves near Oakland, CA and goes to Chicago. On the first day we climbed through the historic Sierra Nevada's on the rails laid down by the Union pacific as they built the transcontinental railroad. We crossed those mountains with incredible views of the recent snow, passing not far from the deep snows around Donner lake. We later crossed through red canyon and a few other places that can only be seen from the rails. The train then cut through Reno, up across Utah. It was 17 degrees out and blowing snow as we happily chugged along at 80 MPH. It's fun eating dinner and watching herds of elk go by. As I sit typing this, we're zooming through central Virginia. If I ever have a choice in the matter, I will not fly an airplane ever again. Anyway, I'm going to pack this up as I'd like to sort my bags out before dinner. Shortly after dinner we should be in PHiladelphia and hopefully beating the snowstorm that seems to have followed us from Utah. Current Mood: relaxed |

Furry article in German media.
(crossposted to furry_media) We've been to a fursuit outing last saturday, and coincidentally met a reporter from Der Express who instantly showed interest and interviewed me and Eisbaer about the people in costumes. Now this is a yellow press / tabloid newspaper, which sort of goes hand in hand with Daily Mail, The Sun, or any other kind of sensationalist / News Corp. release, so we were rather wary what to say and what to keep to ourselves. The situation was too spontaneous for a in-depth interview anyway. Turns out that the article is wrong in most ways... but still good, and in some ways, funny: Here is the translation of the text: "Whoops, what strange kind of critters are here?" must have been the thoughts of huskylady "Lacy" as she was "attacked" and perduaded for a dance by a horde of giant plush animals.
The people behind the colored animal costumes are a group of Dutch people from Rotterdam and Nijmwegen. "We made the outfits ourselves after we've been on a vacation in Australia last year. There, it has become a tradition to prowl, disguised as plush animal", so the visitors.
(subtext) Husky Lacy, surrounded by Dutch people in disguise. Ironically, of all the facts we gave her, only the name and gender of the husky are correct. She mistook USA with Australia, and forgot the fact that only half of the group were Dutch. But hey, it could've been much, much, MUCH worse. |

Quick Update
Renfield and Cheryl are unfortunately no longer a couple. I spent a few days last week helping Renfield shuttle his things (books, clothes, car parts) from Cheryl's place in West Virginia back to Mom's place. Renfield's currently looking for work (I can sympathize, since I'm currently on the bench as well) and kinda down about things in general. But a new year's coming. New year, new start. That's about all the news I've got, really. I'm thinking of baking some banana bread this afternoon. Nom. Here's a cool link or two. Cartoon/illustration blogs: Drawn! and The Little Chimp Society. Another Update: Renfield called, said he might have a job! Hray! Old news: I gave Renfield a durian candy to see what his reaction was. He said it tasted like toes. -=) Current Mood: busy |
